Amanda CookI trained at the British School of Osteopathy as a mature student and graduated with a Bachelor of Osteopathy degree. I have taken a post-graduate course in Cranial Osteopathy with the Sutherland Cranial Society. I am registered with the General Osteopathic Council and am a member of the British Osteopathic Association. I treat both structurally and cranially and all ages from newborn to the older adult. In 2007 I moved from London to South Wales and now run busy practices in Chepstow, Monmouth and Newport. Prior to my training I used to be a Treasurer working in the city and outer suburbs of London. Through working long and stressful hours I discovered osteopathy following a year of suffering low back pain and migraines. I was persuaded to see an osteopath and was amazed when I suddenly became pain free and realised how long I had put up with this discomfort. This is one of the reasons why I decided to become an osteopath. My aim is to make more people aware of their bodies and help them to realise that they can do something about the pain and discomfort they may find themselves in, such as from the stresses and strains of working life, from sports injuries, accidents and emotional traumas. One of the principles of osteopathy is to treat you as an individual and that includes taking into account your lifestyle, your family, your emotions, encompassing the whole of you. I want you to become aware that you don’t have to “put up” with having irritable bowel syndrome, you don’t have to “put up” with having a lower back ache. You can do something about it. As well as treating for the primary symptom I look at why those symptoms started in the first place and I will give you advice on exercises, diet, etc to help you change what is causing these symptoms to occur. I see many babies and children in my practices as I believe that if I can treat this age group early on in their growing life then any retained stresses and strains from birth can be removed before they can develop into irritations / dysfunctions / pain later on in life. For instance I’ve just successfully treated a 7 year old child who had irritable bowel syndrome for 4 years. This child had a difficult birth. Retained mouldings through the cranial bones and strains through the digestive system had caused problems which the medical profession were unable to help with. This child only needed 2 treatments and now is able to enjoy school and play with friends without having this pain and irritation to deal with. I continue studying within this profession not just because my registration with the General Osteopathic Council requires me to but also because I enjoy discovering new ways of being able to help you. Some of the more common problems I treat are joint pains, headaches, sciatica, trapped nerves, sports injuries, depression, anxiety, sinusitis, arthritis, crying, screaming and irritable babies, colic, behavioural problems, sleep disturbances, ear infections and asthma.
